English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Endorsement

Our ESOL Endorsement Program is suspended until further notice. We are taking no new students at this time! Current students in the program must finish their courses by summer 2012. |
The School of Education offers teaching certification endorsements in the areas listed below. All endorsements are approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, and the School of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Endorsement Areas:
- Gifted Education
- English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - Program suspended until further notice; no new students accepted.
- Reading
Our goal is to assist teachers and future teachers develop approaches to help ELL's succeed in their language acquisition process both socially and academically.
Through this endorsement we can help you develop an effective language program by addressing the following issues:
- Providing appropriate instructional support for English learners, not only in the early stages of learning conversational English, but also in the longer process of catching up in academic aspects of English
- Building flexibility into instruction and assessment provisions which recognizes the diversity among English learners
- Providing encouragement and opportunities for students to continue to develop their home language ability, as this is the foundation upon which learners construct academic development in English
Specific areas for development and training:
- Instructional accommodations for ELLs
- Integration of content objectives with language objectives
- Team-Teaching training
- Sheltered instruction training
- Language and culture projects to help with parent-teacher relationships
- Material development,
- Techniques to enhance teaching of phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension, etc.
Course Information and Dates
For current students only, you must complete the following courses no later than summer 2012. There will be no ESOL courses offered after summer 2012.
We offer the 3 courses as follows:
- Summer - all three courses
- Spring - TSLE 6002: Applied Linguistics in ESOL (3)
The endorsement is taught completely online with the exception of the practicum experience that requires the student's presence in a school. Our Summer 2012 Endorsement courses follow NGCSU's Full Summer Session calendar.
The endorsement consists of 3 courses:
TSLE 6001: Cultural Issues in ESOL (summer or fall)
INSTRUCTOR: Kristi HislopeThis course explores the nature of culture and the role of cultural factors in the teaching and learning of English as an additional language in U.S. schools. This course is one of three courses that constitute the Georgia state add-on endorsement for TESOL in public schools.
Objectives:
- to explore the nature of culture and gain an understanding of how one’s own and others’ assumptions, attitudes and behaviors are shaped by culture
- to gain insight into the connections among language, culture and education
- to gain first-hand experience with crossing cultural boundaries
- to become conversant with classroom materials and techniques dealing with culture and cultural diversity
TSLE 6002: Applied Linguistics in ESOL (summer or spring)
INSTRUCTOR: Kristi HislopeThis course explores theories of language acquisition, with a focus on the nature and development of first and second language, the elements of linguistics, language varieties, and the influences on the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of English as an additional language across age levels.
This course is one of three courses that constitute the Georgia state add-on endorsement for TESOL in public schools.
Objectives:
- To gain knowledge of the nature and structure of language, including general principles and terminology of linguistics
- To learn to recognize and dispel language myths
- To develop understanding of language varieties
- To increase appreciation for the challenges that English language learners experience on all levels
- To gain knowledge of the processes of and relationships between language acquisition and language instruction and assessments in listening, speaking, reading and writing
TSLE 6003: Materials and Methods in ESOL (summer or fall)
INSTRUCTORS: tbaThis course includes a PRACTICUM component. You have two options:
a) Complete it during the summer you are taking the courses
b) Complete it during the fall at a school of your choice and delay the
completion of the endorsement until that portion of the course is completed.
Either way you need to inform the instructors as soon as possible of your plans so that we can plan accordingly.
