Appalachian Community Studies Certificate Program

Studying Appalachia makes sense for all students—those born in Appalachia and those new to it. The Appalachian Community Studies Certificate Program is a professional certificate program designed to explore images of the region and its inhabitants, nurturing an awareness of the rich diversity of life in the area, its history, culture, and people. You will complete a series of courses that provide extensive preparation in the field.

You will learn about history, culture, challenges, health, and sustainability within the region. The question often comes up among students interested in exploring Appalachian Studies: “What can I do with an Appalachian Studies Certificate?” The answer truly is, “Whatever you want.”

Effective January 1, 2011: In order to earn the Appalachian Community Studies Certificate, candidates must fill out an application and successfully complete the four core courses and four electives within the calendar year:

Four CORE classes are:

  • Introduction to Appalachia
  • History of Appalachia
  • Appalachia Today
  • Traditional Arts in Southern Appalachia 

Electives:

  • The History of Gold Mining in Lumpkin County
  • Medicinal Herbs of Appalachia I & II
  • Story of Bluegrass
  • Appalachian Basket Weaving 
  • Appalachian Egg Basket Variations
  • Stories of an Appalachian Christmas
  • Walking Stick and Gourd Painting

Application Process

Effective 11/1/2011 you must complete an application to be accepted into the certificate program. There is no additional cost to enroll in the certificate program. Click here to download application form.
