New trustees elected to university's foundation

(July 20, 2010) Seven new trustees have been elected to the North Georgia College & State University Foundation, Inc.

The new trustees are Bill Chapman Sr., Dr. Sherman Day, Leslie Fowler, Ron Larson, Nick Massengill, Patricia Powell, and David Grange.

Chapman, of Lilburn, is a 1959 graduate of North Georgia and his wife, Betty, is a 1958 graduate. Now retired, Bill is a former assistant to Sen. Max Cleland and is involved in Make A Difference Ministries, Inc., in Alpharetta, Ga. He has served in numerous volunteer roles with North Georgia.

Day, of Dawsonville, is former president of North Georgia College & State University (1996-1999). He is an honorary North Georgia alumnus and Lifetime Member of the President’s Club.

Fowler, of Gainesville, is a 1981 graduate of North Georgia. Now retired, she served as a behavior disorder teacher with the Gainesville City Schools. She is a Lifetime Member of the President’s Club, and her husband, Rob, is also a 1981 graduate and was awarded the Alumni Association’s Young Alumnus Award in 2010.

Larson, of Dahlonega, is vice president of operations and general manager of Achasta. He is a member of the Mike Cottrell School of Business’ Business Advisory Council and a member of the Saints Club. Ron and his wife, Linda, are actively involved in various community organizations, and Ron participates in several non-profit boards.

Massengill, of Marietta, is a 1981 graduate of North Georgia, as is his wife, Angela. Nick is vice president of sales and marketing for Robert Bowden, Inc., a privately held wholesale building material supply & manufacturing company in Marietta. He is a Lifetime Member of Alumni Association, a Lifetime Member of the President’s Club, and a Charter Member of the William Pierce Price Society.

Powell, of Murrayville, is a 1972 North Georgia graduate. She is a retired chemist with the Coca-Cola Company. Her husband, Whit, is a 1973 North Georgia graduate; their daughter, Jamie, graduated from North Georgia in 2003.

Grange, of Wilmington, N.C., is a 1970 graduate of North Georgia and served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army, earning earned three Silver Stars and two Purple Hearts. Following his military retirement, he served at the helm of the McCormick Foundation, one of the country’s largest charitable organizations. In 2009, he became CEO of Pharmaceutical Product Development, Inc., a global contract research organization. He is a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and received the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University System of Georgia. Grange will defer the beginning of his term until 2011.

In addition to the seven newly elected trustees, Will Carter, of Gainesville, will serve as an ex-officio member of the board due to his role as president of the university's Saints Club. Carter, a business entrepreneur since 1989, has served in numerous volunteer roles in Gainesville.

The North Georgia College & State University Foundation Inc. is a Georgia non-profit corporation with the purpose of receiving, investing and administering the private support of North Georgia College & State University. It is governed by a board of trustees made up of alumni and friends of the university.

New TrusteesCOL (R) Ed Nix '51 is current chairman of the foundation's trustees. Dr. Andrew Leavitt, the university's vice president of advancement, serves as executive director.
