University plans special events to mark consolidation

(Dec. 20, 2012) – As the formal consolidation of Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University nears, plans are underway for campus-based events on Jan. 10 to mark the beginning of a new era as the schools become the University of North Georgia. The consolidation is set to be ratified by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia at its meeting on Jan. 8, 2013.

(Sept. 25, 2012) – Students in the soon-to-be University of North Georgia will decide the university’s new mascot from three finalists: Golden Eagles, Nighthawks and Warriors. The finalists were determined through a process that began in August to select a new mascot and generated more than 750 different suggestions from students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members.

(Aug. 29, 2012) - As students settle in for fall semester at Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University, the two institutions are beginning the process of adopting a new mascot to be used once the schools consolidate as the University of North Georgia. Pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges later this year and the University System of Georgia Board of Regents in January, the two schools will consolidate in January 2013.

(May 8, 2012) – The consolidation of Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University took another step forward today with the University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents’ actions on the mission statement and name of the institution formed through the consolidation. The board approved the name University of North Georgia for the new institution created through the consolidation of North Georgia College & State University (North Georgia) and Gainesville State College (GSC).

Former president selected as executive director for new University Center

Day, who once served as president of North Georgia College & State University, is stepping out of retirement to serve as the executive director of University Center | GA400, an instructional center being developed jointly by the university and Gainesville State College.

Pierce named interim president of Gainesville State College

ATLANTA (April 18) – University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby announced today the appointment of Dr. Randy Pierce as the interim president of Gainesville State College. Pierce will assume the post on July 1 of this year, upon the planned retirement of current president Dr. Martha T. Nesbitt.
