Modern and Foreign Language Education at North Georgia

Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, Spanish

Update: Registration is closed for the Summer Language Institute 2012

Are you interested in studying a modern or foreign language? Would you like to learn a language of strategic importance to the military, FBI, CIA, Department of Homeland Security, State Department and other national agencies? Are you considering a career in International Affairs? Would you like to work in organizations or businesses located in other countries? Are you already proficient in more than one language and considering the study of another? Do you enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures and peoples? Then you should consider North Georgia's Language Education programs.

You can learn Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, or Spanish at North Georgia. You can major in Chinese, French, or Spanish, and the university is working on an Arabic major. Or, you can minor or any of the seven available languages. If you want to satisfy your area B foreign language requirement only, you can still take classes in the language of your choice.

However, if you want to learn a foreign language well enough really use it in your career after college, you can do so by minoring, majoring or double majoring in your target language and following the intensive program outlined below.

Upon completion of the intensive program, depending on your level of academic commitment and verbal ability, you can achieve proficiency approaching “Intermediate High” or higher on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency scale. You will also develop basic reading and writing skills.

Note!  In November, 2011, North Georgia was awarded a grant and designated as a “flagship” university for Chinese instruction for Cadets by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) at the Department of Defense.  NSEP’s Language Flagship programs help students achieve a high-level of proficiency in strategic languages and culture.

Intensive Program Phase 1: Summer Institute

June 24- July 31, 2012

The Summer Institute is academically challenging, fun, and thoroughly rewarding. You will earn 8 academic credit hours toward your bachelor’s degree and complete the foreign language required for most bachelor’s degrees (some degrees require an additional semester). The Summer Language Institutes are carefully tailored language programs of study in Arabic, Chinese (course is filled and closed), Korean, Russian, or Spanish. Activities are engaging, challenging, and fun with emphasis on learning the language through substantial interaction between students and native-speaking faculty and assistants. In addition to classroom instruction, you will enjoy co-curricular activities in the language.  Because of their accelerated and intensive nature, the Summer Institutes are residential programs, and as such, you must live on campus for the duration of the program.
